Beckman Scholars Program

The Beckman Research Scholarship is awarded to outstanding research students who are majoring in Chemistry & Biochemistry, MIMG, or MCDB who have a strong commitment to research and are committed to completing an honors thesis or a comprehensive 199 project during their senior year.


The award total, $18,200, is distributed over one academic year and two summers; there is an additional $2,800 stipend for travel & research supplies.


  • Commitment to completing a departmental Honors Thesis or comprehensive research project in their final academic year
  • Commitment to conducting research full-time (minimum of 40 hrs/week for 10 weeks) during BOTH Summer 2017 and Summer 2018. Attending summer school is not allowed
  • Complete a research report due in July which includes research activities, mentorship, career and education plans



Eligible students nominated by their Beckman Mentor will be emailed an application. Candidates will be asked to provide the following:

  • Application form and academic plan
  • SRP reports and 199 papers (if applicable)
  • Previous Research Programs Statement (1 page; if applicapble)
  • Research Proposal (2 pages)
  • Impact of Beckman Scholarship Statement (1 page)
  • Letter of Recommendation*
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Proof of Completion for the Lab Safety Fundamental Concepts course

*Letters of recommendation should be submitted by the Beckman Mentor at UCLA. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the faculty letter is received by the deadline in Dr. Turner's office. Please be sure to contact your faculty mentor EARLY to ensure that the letter is submitted on time on your behalf.
