Charles Buchanan Dean's Prize Award Winners

Dr. Charles Buchanan, Professor Emeritus of Physics, is the founding director of PEERS. He retired in 2009.

Each year at Science Poster Day one outstanding PEERS alumnus is chosen to receive Charles Buchanan Dean's Prize Award.

Below are the winners since the award's inception in 2009.

 

  Ms. Michelle Crespo (2009)


Mentor: Dr. Carlos Portera-Cailliau
Title: Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor Activation Induces Elongation of Early Dendritic Protrusions [abstract]

Michelle was a member of the PEERS 2006 class. During her time at UCLA she participated in CARE Scholars and MARC. She is currently in the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. She will earn a MD and Masters in Public Health concurrently.

  Ms. Catherine Pourdavoud (2010)


Mentor: Dr. Peter Bradley
Title: Proteolytic Maturation and Host Targets of a Novel Rhoptry Effector Protein in Toxoplasma gondi [abstract]

Catherine was a member of the PEERS 2007 class. During her time at UCLA she participated in CARE Fellows as well the Undergraduate Research Fellows Program (URFP) and Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP). She currently works in a lab as a researcher.

  Mr. Varun Shahi (2011)


Mentor: Dr. David E. Krantz
Title: A Pharmacological Screen in Drosophila may Identify Novel Drugs to Treat Mood and Attention Deficit Disorders [abstract]

Varun was a member of the PEERS class of 2007. He participated in CARE Scholars, a summer research program at CalTech and was an Undergraduate Research Fellow (URFP). Varun is currently in Medical School at the Mayo Clinic.

  Mr. Victor Ruiz (2012)


Mentor: Dr. Kendall N Houk
Title: Conformational Analysis of Bryostatin Derivatives to Elucidate Structure-Affinity Relationships [abstract]

Victor was part of the PEERS class of 2009. He participated in CARE Scholars, MSD Scholars and spent a summer at the UCSF as part of the Amgen Scholars Program. He is currently in a PhD program in Pharmacology.

  Ms. Jennifer Marie Peña (2013)


Mentor: Dr. Elissa A Hallem
Title: Innate Immune Response Of Drosophila To Entomopathogenic Nematode Infection [abstract]

Jennifer was part of the PEERS class of 2010. She participated in CARE Scholars, UC LEADS, Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Program, and spent a summer at Harvard through the EXROP Program. She is currently in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences Umbrella Program at Harvard. Her objective is to earn a PhD.

  Ms. Eleanor Yiayuan Chang (2014)

Title: Differential Mitochondrial Gene Expression in Patients Undergoing Mechanical Circulatory Support Device Implantation [abstract]

Eleanor was part of the PEERS 2010 class. She participated in research for several quarters.

Jennifer is part of the PEERS 2011 class. She has participated in the Undergraduate Research Fellows Program and done research in Dr. Bradley's lab for several quarters.
